This January marked the 15th anniversary of the Mount Vernon Voice as Mount Vernon and Lee's true hometown newspaper.
The Mount Vernon Voice was started in January 2002 to meet an obvious need in our community—Mount Vernon, Lee, and Old Town Alexandria deserved a newspaper that covered this area, was published in this area, and was written by two residents of this area. Our successful growth over the past 15 years has proved just how great a need there was. We are proud to be giving our community this in-depth coverage.
Co-publishers Marlene Miller and Steve Hunt have lived and worked in Mount Vernon, Lee, and Alexandria for many years. We know the communities, the people, and the issues. And, we care—we live here, and so all of these issues affect us personally as well.
The Mount Vernon Voice has been named a Business Star of the Year and a Distinguished Business of the Year by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce. We have also been honored as New Business of the Year 2002 by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce; with a Good Neighbor Award by the American Red Cross; as nominee for Alexandria Small Business of the Year; as a Community Partner by United Community Ministries (UCM) and Christian Relief Services; and by Gum Springs for our community involvement among other citations.
We have won numerous awards over the years from the Virginia Press Association including first places in investigative reporting, editorial writing and headline writing and awards for special sections and photography.
In addition, we at the Voice believe strongly in giving back to our community. We have been sponsors of events for most of the local charities and nonprofits in Mount Vernon and Lee, The Campagna Center in Alexandria and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.
The Mount Vernon Voice is a member of both the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce (where both Marlene Miller and Steve Hunt have served on the Board of Directors) and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.
