Marlene writes:

The Mount Vernon Voice was started in January 2002 to meet an obvious need in our community—Mount Vernon, Lee, and Old Town Alexandria deserved a newspaper that covered this area, was published in this area, and was written by two residents of this area. Our successful growth over the past almost six years has proved just how great a need this was. We are proud to be giving our community this in-depth coverage.

Co-publishers Marlene Miller and Steve Hunt have lived and worked in Mount Vernon, Lee, and Alexandria for many years, most recently as editor and writer/photographer, respectively, of the Mount Vernon Gazette. We know the communities, the people, and the issues. And, we care — we live here, and so all of these issues affect us personally as well.

Over the years our circulation has increased to 12,000 copies per week and we blanket the area with a combination of subscribers, driveway deliveries and bulk drops in places such as all the local library branches.

The Mount Vernon Voice was named a Business Star of the Year 2007 by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce. We have also been honored as New Business of the Year 2002 by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce; with a Good Neighbor Award by the American Red Cross in 2003; as nominee for Alexandria Small Business of the Year in 2004; as a Community Partner by United Community Ministries (UCM) and Christian Relief Services; and by Gum Springs for our community involvement.

We have won numerous awards over the years from the Virginia Press Association including first places in investigative reporting, editorial writing and headline writing and awards for special sections and photography.

In addition, we at the Voice believe strongly in giving back to our community. We have been sponsors of the Lee District, Kingstowne, and Fort Hunt Concerts, the Alexandria Red Cross Waterfront Festival, the Scottish Walk and other benefits for The Campagna Center, several Torpedo Factory events, and many events for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

We have sponsored numerous events for our local non-profits including UCM, Good Shepherd Housing, New Hope Housing, and the Carpenter's Shelter.

The Voice has also sponsored two Education Forums for Mount Vernon and Lee featuring our school board members and former schools superintendent Dr. Dan Domenech.
